Europa Vs. Twin Peaks

Lars Von Trier or David Lynch, both in surreal and artistic way are making movies and giving their view on the aspect of life and history. Most of their films are making people nauseous. Both of them were challenged and in some cases called resist, fascist and many other names. Is it because not everyone can understand or have stomach for this, they have always been on the spotlight, and many critics favorite subject. Me, personally, I’m more into Lars’s movies, maybe because I’m from Europe and find it more closer to my culture. Set design in Lars Von Trier’s movie “Europe” is pretty dark. “You will now listen to my voice. My voice will help you and guide you still deeper into Europa. Every time you hear my voice, with every word and every number, you will enter into a still deeper layer, open, relaxed and receptive. I shall now count from one to ten.” The voice leading you through chapters of Europe is even hallucinogenic and hypnotic. Von Trier plays about with colors and tricks such as spinning figures and projected images in the background. The movie was inspired with David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. But is it really? Here is a short overview of both movies.

Canadian photographer Ulric Collette brought brothers, sisters, parents and their children together for these face mashing pictures. Each portrait is split between two family faces to create scarily similar portraits.

New York photographer Jordan Matter’s “Dancers Among Us” project features performers from the Paul Taylor Dance Company performing guerrilla dance moves in iconic Manhattan locations

By getting the dancers to pull off their difficult poses surrounded by normal people in everyday situations, Jordan hopes to highlight the skill of talented individuals who walk among us everyday. “I was struck by the skill of the dancers of Paul Taylor and through a friend managed to get guys and girls there to volunteer their time for this project,” Jordan said. “I was thinking about the recession and what that meant for talented people who may have lost their jobs. Are you still a dancer if you are not paid to perform? Or are you still a chef when you don’t have a kitchen to cook in? It is about people who walk the streets with this incredible skill who could just advertise their ability any time they wanted. Wanting to project the dancer within the situation, be that at 42nd Street Times Square subway station or at the New York Museum of Natural History, Jordan wanted the pictures to look organic. “I wanted to explain through the drama of the pictures how a dancer would react to the rain, or to being in the Apple cube store, or simply drinking a coffee”. “We want each frame to be as spontaneous as possible so we are going into these places without permission in some circumstances. People always react defensively when they see a flash of a camera and instinctively think that something is going on, for good or bad. We shot a St Patrick’s scene during mass and were thrown out. Don’t Think That These Are Natural Landscapes

Artist Matthew Albanese created a “Sugarscape” out of corn syrup, jelly, and twenty pounds of sugar. Although the model may look like scene directly from Antarctica it took the artist over two months to grow the crystals in his studio. He also used such materials as paprika for his Martian landscape, cotton and many others to give this incredible illusion of something real. So if you have ever seen a landscape that you thought looked good enough to eat; now you have seen the real thing. It is truly a work of art.

To create a realistic image of rolling plains of grass blown by the wind, Matthew uses faux fur

Matthew creates cloud effects using cotton wool and careful lightng

Sugarland, Made out of 20 pounds of sugar, jello and corn syrup. The crystals were grown in studio over the course of two months.

Paprika Mars. Made out of 12 pounds paprika, cinnamon, nutmeg, chili powder and charcoal

Mars # 2. Again, Paprika, cinnamon, thyme, chili powder, charcoal,

Fields, After the Storm. This model is simply made out of faux fur(fields), cotton (clouds) and sifted tile grout(mountains).

Volcano, “Breaking Point”, made out of tile grout, cotton, phosphorous ink. this model volcano was illuminated from within by 6-60 watt light bulbs.

A miniature living room…

Burning Room, Made of wood, nylon, plexiglass, purchased dollhouse furniture. The model was actually set on fire to achieve this effect.

Aurora Borealis. This one was made by photographing a beam of colored light against a black curtain to achieve the edge effect. The trees were composited from life ( so far the only real life element in any of these images) The stars are simply strobe light through holes in cork board.

This one is a mixture of many different materials, tile grout, moss, bottle brushes (pine trees) Actual clippings from ground cover and was built on top of standard outdoor patio table (water glass). The sky is canvas painted blue. Coloring was again achieved by shifting white balance.

Great Leaf Carving

This artwork is called Leafage Carving and is a very complicated process. These images aren’t drawn on the leaves but carved. The whole operation includes more than 60 working procedures. In brief, when creating the image, only a portion of the leaf’s surface is cut off, while a very thin, almost invisible translucent layer remains. I’m stunned, it is really need to be seen!

The Temple of Trash

Netherlands are a very interesting country. They make plenty of bizarre creative stuff like for example this ‘Trash Temple.’ The temple is situated in an old neighborhood in the Rotterdam port area. It is 7m high, 25m long and 10m wide. Temple of Trash was built with 100 tons of pressed bales of PET bottles. I’d like to see it one day!
